A Weekend of Future Champions

The final weekend of March brought together the next generation of European fencing across three venues, as young athletes competed in the U14 circuits in Heraklion and Ciudad Real, alongside the U23 European Circuit in Daugavpils. Across all competitions, the level of performance once again confirmed the depth and diversity of talent emerging on the continent.


Heraklion Hosts Strong Sabre and Foil Fields

In Heraklion, the U14 Circuit brought together foil and sabre specialists for two days of intense competition.

In the men’s foil event, Georgia’s Lazare Chitadze claimed victory after a strong and consistent performance, overcoming Germany’s Caspar Melita in the final. The podium was completed by Great Britain’s Jinmi Adesanya and Edoardo Bishay, both demonstrating impressive tactical maturity.

The women’s foil competition saw Singapore’s Linao Zhang take the gold medal, ahead of Greece’s Afroditi Vardaka. The host nation celebrated further success with Maria Vasileia Zamaria and Maria Loukea both securing bronze medals.

Sabre events were dominated by Greek athletes, starting with Iasonas Ntivis, who triumphed in the men’s competition. Germany’s Jasper Alexej Geiss finished second, while Jonas Schneider of Germany and Aidan Matthew Taguinod of the Philippines shared third place. In the women’s sabre, Greece secured a full podium, with Pandora Gousopoulou leading Eirini Anastasopoulou in the final, while Sofia Zoumpou and Arianne Bristena Neacsu added two more bronze medals for the home team.

Ciudad Real Delivers Multi-Weapon Action

At the U14 Circuit in Ciudad Real, athletes competed across all three weapons, producing a rich and competitive programme.

In women’s foil, Spain’s Karen Caldeiro Papagiannopoulou took gold on home soil, defeating Great Britain’s Aleksandra Pensa in the final, while Brazil’s Carolina Aravena and Maya Schneider shared third place. The men’s foil event saw another Spanish victory through Mario Rubini, who overcame Teymour Said of Great Britain, with João Pedro Perito of Brazil and Andrei Honciu Ballester of Spain completing the podium.

Sabre events continued to highlight the host nation’s strength, as Adriana Vicente Moreno secured gold in the women’s competition, ahead of Italy’s Melissa Raggi, while Leonor Cunha of Portugal and Julia Beltran Gil of Spain finished third. In the men’s sabre, Germany’s Giovanni La Cognata emerged victorious, followed by Bulgaria’s Mihail Atanasov, with William Thomas of Great Britain and Martin Pineda of Spain taking bronze.

In épée, Italy celebrated success through Matilde Giulia Marchi, who won the women’s event ahead of Great Britain’s Mila Turkmen, while Anike Thompson of Great Britain and Manuela Barandiaran Sanchez of Spain shared third place. The men’s épée competition was won by Poland’s Pawel Roguski, who finished ahead of Brazil’s Lorenzo Castello Branco, with Yehor Karyuchenko of Ukraine and Benjamin McConnell of Great Britain completing the podium.

Daugavpils Highlights U23 Épée Excellence

The U23 European Circuit in Daugavpils focused on épée, where Estonia delivered a remarkable performance in the men’s event. Erik Tobias led an all-Estonian final, defeating Markus Salm, while Ludovico Curio Galleani of Italy and Kasper Tafenau of Estonia secured bronze medals.

In the women’s competition, Latvia’s Sofija Prosina delighted the home crowd by taking gold, ahead of Lithuania’s Beatrice Zilionyte. Bronze medals went to Kamila Jonynaite of Lithuania and Aleksandra Nikolajeva of Estonia, completing a strong Baltic presence on the podium.
