Cagliari concludes with team titles and overall standings

Final Titles Decided in Cagliari

The 17th European Under 23 Fencing Championships in Cagliari concluded with the final team events, bringing the competition to a close after four days of high-level action.

In women’s sabre, Italy claimed gold on home soil with Michela Landi, Manuela Spica, Amelia Giovannelli and Alessandra Nicolai delivering a confident and controlled performance throughout the day. France secured the silver medal with Cyrielle Rioux, Mathilde Mouroux, Lola Tranquille and Rita Robineaux, while Bulgaria completed the podium with Beloslava Ivanova, Emma Neikova, Mariela Georgieva and Veronika Vasileva.

Italy also triumphed in men’s épée, where Simone Mencarelli, Fabrizio Cuomo, Nicolò Del Contrasto and Matteo Galassi combined to take the title after a series of strong team performances. Israel finished in second place with Dov Ber Vilensky, Alon Sarid, Fedor Khaperskiy and Yehonathan Lambrey Messika, while Estonia earned bronze through Erik Tobias, Oliver Laasik, Kasper Tafenau and Valentin Altunin.

The final event of the Championships, women’s foil team, saw Italy once again on top. Carlotta Ferrari, Aurora Grandis, Irene Bertini and Matilde Molinari delivered a consistent performance to secure gold. France took silver with Garance Roger, Marion Rousseau, Alicia Audibert and Keren Aye, while Poland completed the podium with Karolina Zurawska, Amelia Olszewska, Hanna Wojtas and Natasza Kus.

Italy Leads the Medal Table

Italy finished at the top of the medal standings with six gold, one silver and two bronze medals, confirming its consistency and ability to deliver in decisive moments. France placed second with three gold, six silver and three bronze medals, recording the highest total number of podium finishes at the Championships.

A key feature of this year’s medal table is the contrast between efficiency and depth. Italy showed a high conversion rate in finals, turning opportunities into titles and building a clear advantage in gold medals. France, meanwhile, demonstrated remarkable depth across all weapons, reaching numerous finals but converting fewer of them into victories.

Israel and Spain shared third place, each collecting one gold, one silver and one bronze medal, highlighting their balanced performances across both individual and team events.

In total, 12 nations reached the medal table, underlining the competitive depth of European fencing.
