Opening day sets the stage as Europe’s future stars begin their continental battle in Sardinia

The 17th European Under 23 Fencing Championships officially opened in Cagliari, bringing together Europe’s most promising young athletes for four days of high-level competition.

Europe’s future is here. A total of 381 fencers from 37 countries have gathered in Cagliari for this year’s edition, setting the stage for a truly competitive and intense championship at U23 level.

During the official presentation, organisers and local authorities underlined the importance of hosting such an event, both for the region and for the development of fencing across Europe.

Among the speakers, Daniele Garozzo — Olympic champion in men’s foil at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and now Vice President of the Italian Fencing Federation — highlighted the importance of the U23 category. Drawing from his own experience at the highest level of the sport, he emphasised how this stage of competition plays a decisive role in shaping future champions, with many former medallists of these Championships later achieving Olympic success.

The Under 23 European Championships continue to serve as a bridge between junior and senior fencing, offering athletes the opportunity to compete under pressure at a high international level.

First Day on the Piste

From the very first day, the competition moves straight into action, with three individual events opening the programme: men’s sabre, women’s épée and men’s foil.

The preliminary rounds are taking place at the Fiera exhibition centre, while the finals for gold medals will be staged at the PalaPirastu, providing a dynamic setting for the decisive bouts.

Athletes from across Europe are stepping onto the pistes with the goal of making an immediate impact, setting the tone for the days ahead.
