France Leads Opening Day Medals

25 April 2026

Three individual titles decided as U23 Championships begin in Cagliari

First Medals Awarded in Cagliari

The first day of the 17th European Under 23 Fencing Championships in Cagliari delivered high-level performances and the first set of individual medals across three weapons.

In women’s épée, Italy celebrated a home victory as Gaia Caforio claimed gold in front of the local crowd. After winning silver at these Championships last year in Tallinn, Caforio went one step further this time, confirming her progression at U23 level. France’s Oceane Francillonne secured the silver medal, while bronze medals went to Emily Conrad of Ukraine and Emma Sont of Romania.

France dominated the men’s foil event, taking both gold and silver. Louis Pradel emerged as the winner after a strong campaign, with teammate Anas Anane finishing second to complete a French one-two. The podium was completed by Hunor Kosztolanyi of Hungary and Adrien Helmy-Cocoynacq of France.

Another gold for France came in men’s sabre, where Evan Fraboulet took the title. Spain’s Santiago Madrigal finished with silver, while the bronze medals were shared between Huba Biro of Hungary and Jorge Casaus Pielago of Spain.

Looking Ahead – Day 2

The action continues tomorrow with three more individual events: women’s sabre, men’s épée and women’s foil, where a new set of champions will be crowned.
