The second day of the 2026 European Senior Fencing Championships in Antony delivered a mix of historic achievements, emotional victories and home success as the Women's Foil and Men's Sabre titles were decided.
Historic Ukrainian Triumph in Women's Foil
Ukraine celebrated a landmark result as Olga Sopit captured the Women's Foil gold medal, becoming the first Ukrainian fencer to win the European title in the weapon. In a competition filled with world-class talent, Sopit produced an outstanding performance to secure a historic victory for her country.
The silver medal went to Italy's Arianna Errigo, one of the greatest foil fencers of all time. The Italian added yet another major medal to an extraordinary career that already includes multiple world and European titles, Olympic medals and more than a decade at the very top of international fencing. However, it was another painful near miss for Errigo, who once again finished as runner-up at the European Championships.
Spain's Maria Marino and Vladislava Peniushkina shared the bronze medals after impressive runs to the semi-finals.
Patrice Finally Claims European Gold
The Men's Sabre event ended with a dream result for the home crowd as France celebrated a one-two finish. Jean-Philippe Patrice finally climbed to the top step of the European podium, winning the first senior European title of his career after taking bronze medals at the previous two editions of the championships.
In an all-French final, Patrice defeated teammate Maxime Pianfetti to secure gold, while Hungary's Andras Szatmari added another European medal to his collection with bronze. The second bronze medal went to Romania's George Dragomir, one of the most promising young sabreurs on the European circuit, who continued his impressive rise with the biggest senior result of his career.
