Israel, Italy and Russia Strike Gold on First Day of U20 European Championships
Juniors Take the Stage
The Junior (U20) chapter of the European Championships began with intensity in Tbilisi, as 285 athletes competed across three individual events on the opening day. With 126 fencers in men’s épée, 87 in women’s foil and 72 in women’s sabre, the scale and level of the competition immediately confirmed the strength of Europe’s junior generation.
Junior Men’s Épée: Khaperskiy Delivers
In the largest field of the day, Junior Men’s Épée demanded both endurance and tactical maturity. Khaperskiy Fedor of Israel navigated a challenging direct elimination tableau to secure the European title, demonstrating composure in the decisive moments.
Duchene Noam of France earned the silver medal after a consistent performance throughout the day, while Lumineau Tristan representing British Fencing and Selyutin Roman of Russia completed the podium with bronze medals.
Junior Women’s Foil: Italian Final
Women’s foil produced an all-Italian final, underlining the depth of Italy’s junior programme in the weapon. Collini Greta captured the gold medal after a confident progression through the elimination rounds, while Franzoni Ludovica secured silver to complete a strong Italian double podium.
The bronze medals went to Atmaca Alara of Türkiye and Tsang Amelie representing British Fencing, both showing resilience and tactical control throughout the competition.
Junior Women’s Sabre: Tallada on Top
In women’s sabre, Tallada Karina of Russia claimed the European title claimed the European title after a composed final performance. Covaliu Amalia of Romania secured silver, while Domonkos Emese of Hungary and Mikhailova Aleksandra of Russia shared bronze medals.
Medal Race After Day I
Following the first day of junior competition, three different delegations have already celebrated gold medals, reflecting the competitive balance of the U20 category.
Italy stands out for its overall consistency, collecting both gold and silver in women’s foil. Israel adds a prestigious gold in men’s épée, while the russian athletes delegation combines gold and bronze from women’s sabre.
France and Romania have entered the standings with silver medals, and Türkiye, Great Britain and Hungary have secured bronze podium finishes. With eight delegations already represented among the medals, the junior championship promises an intense and closely contested race in the days ahead.

The junior individual competitions continue tomorrow with Women’s Épée starting at 09:00, followed by Men’s Foil at 11:00 and Men’s Sabre at 13:00.
