Italy’s Pinna claimed the title in Cadet Women’s Foil event, providing Italy with its second gold in this European Championships in Estonia.
Ranked 2nd in a field of 77 fencers, Pinna emerged as the 1st ranked fencer from the pools, having won all matches and only dropping 6 hits in total. The splendid performance in the pools granted Pinna a BYE through to the table of 32 where she comfortably defeated Juliana Semarova (LAT) 15-5. Pinna showed no signs of slowing down as she defeated Aleksandra Nowakowska (POL) 15-6 and then Elif Su Ay (TUR) 15-5 to advance to the semi-final, where she won over Uliana-Dumitrita (MDA) 15-8 to advance to the grand final.
Her opponent, fellow Italian fencer Greta Collini, advanced to the final by beating Amelie Tsang (GBR) 15-14 in a nail-biter in the round of 16, Marta Jakubowska (POL) 15-11 and then Anna Kollar (HUN) 15-4 in the semifinal to secure an Italian double.
As usual when two nationals fence, the match started off at a moderate pace with a 4-4 score entering the first break. After reaching 6-6 at the beginning of the second period, Collini pulled away to a 10-7 lead halfway through the bout. Pinna was however not deterred and clawed back to an even 10-10 before the end of the second period. The two Italians then went tit-for-tat and one minute in to the third period the score was still even, 13-13. Pinna then scored two hits in quick succession and managed to win the final 15-13 to secure her first European title.
